CAIRNS BICYCLE USER GROUP

CYCLING TOURISTS: Come to Cairns!

We would like to invite cyclists from around the world and the rest of Australia, to come to Cairns. Even if you do not have a lot of information before you get here, you can soon find out all you need to know right here in Cairns. Information about maps, accommodation, camping, bike shops, restaurants, pubs, caravan parks, entertainment, activities, tourist attractions, clubs, and much more can be found at tourist information centres, newsagents, map shops and tourist agencies. You are invited to also visit or call us for any assistance.

Winter months are a good time of the year to visit Cairns. The weather is warm, not too hot and certainly not cold which is good for outdoor activites, sight seeing and visiting the beaches. Cycling in the Cairns area is good. We have wide, flat roads with bicycle lanes on the major roads that make it ideal for cycling.

A note of warning: The Kuranda Range, Capt Cook Hwy north of Palm Cove and the Bruce Hwy south of Edmonton, are not ideal conditions for cyclists. These highways have no road shoulders, bike lanes or paths, therefore cyclists need to show caution and have lots of experience.

On a good note: Once you are past these trouble spots, you can experience coastal rides north of Port Douglas, inland from Kuranda to the Atherton Tablelands and southern areas off the highway from Edmonton to Gordonvale. Why not take your bike on the Kuranda Train and ride from there.

Cairns is renouned for its eateries, especially sea food. prawns, bugs, reef fish are a delicacy and not at all that expensive. Fresh vegetables and exotic tropical fruits are a luxury that we take for granted. Meals can start from a $3 pub special to "a la carte", with a wide range of traditional International and Australian cuisine.
