CAIRNS CITY COUNCIL - Public Notices
Cairns City Council has launched an important study to enhance pedestrian and bicycle accessibility across the city. Council has commissioned consultants GHD to assist with preparation of the study.
The purpose of the study is to update the Cairns Bikeway Strategy prepared in 1996, to achieve improved network safety, connectivity and usability by improving linkages for pedestrians and cyclists between residential areas, places of recreation, eduation, work and entertainment. The study also aims to increase levels of walking and cycling for leisure and transportation purposes, by considering a number of user groups who have different needs including students, people commuting to work, families enjoying the scenery on a weekend outing and sporting enthusiasts.
Effective and desirable commuter and recreational routes for pedestrian and cycle travel will be decided and the preparation of a brochure suitable for public use will map walking paths and cycle routes. Accident data and conflicts and traffic volume as well as demographic, topographic and land use information will be taken into consideration when determining the most desirable routes.
As part of the Cairns Pedestrian Movement and Cycle Travel Strategy, Council wishes to encourage community input on existing cycle and pedestrian facilities, together with future network and service improvements.
Personal consultations by way of arranged meetings will be held with each of the major stakeholder groups, including Cairns Bicycle User Group, Department of Education, School Communities, Department of Main Roads, Queensland Transport, Queensland Police and Cairns Physical Activity Committee. A strategic group workshop will be held by invitation and include relevant stateholders such as Council and State Government representatives as well as Bicycle Queensland, Cairns Bicycle User Group and State Cycle Unit representatives to establish broard future strategies, relevant planning issues and desirable network links to enhance future pedestrian and cyclist mobility.
Submissions are now being requested from community groups and interested members of the public outlining their views on the adequacy of existing pathways and bike lanes, and preferred locations for future facilities.
To ensure that your views are considered in the preparation of the study, we ask that you submit your written comments by 28 May 2003.
