Skateboard Injuries on the Rise

A growing number of Queensland children are being injured by riding skateboards, skates or scooters.

From 1998 to 2001 more than 3000 injuries resulted from the use of small-wheeled devices.

It is recommended that children who ride skateboards, skates or scooters, wear suitable protective equipment including a correctly fitted helmet. The helmet should be a bicycle helmet that has a Standards Association of Australia sticker.

Other protective clothing includes gloves, knee and elbow pads and enclosed footwear.

Toll to yesterday - 162. Last year - 179.
