An on-site inspection on 23 November 2006, of Option 2 has revealed a dangerous squeese point at the intersection with Stoney Creek Rd. Hopefully this will be dealt with in the construction of the path in Kamerunga Rd, from Stoney Creek Rd to Harley St

THE UNDERPASS AT KAMERUNGA BRIDGE HAS BEEN CANCELLED - REPORT FROM MAIN ROADS AT THE CAIRNS PEDESTRIAN AND CYCLE FOCUS GROUP 9TH AUGUST 2006.

After years of anticipation, planning and funding approvals, the underpass is not feasible CBUG will not accept that the approved funds are to be diverted to other projects. We have requested that Option 2 of CBUG Report 199 for a bike path on the western side of Kamerunga Rd from the Barron River to Harley St traffic lights and on to the Redlynch turn-off, is a solution. The funds should remain for the purpose of solving the problem of cyclists crossing the highway.

Report 199: Main Roads will construct a path connection in Kamerunga Rd instead of the underpass at the Kamerunga Bridge, Barron River and it will be funded through the Roads Implementation Programme. This project has been brought forward because it is a vital link in the bicycle network. In the meantime the Cairns City Council has refused to construct the path to Sandwich St because it may encourage cyclists to cross the highway. Actually cyclists have no choice but to cross the highway so this argument is invalid. This is example where public liability interferes with providing facilities for cyclists because of perceived risks. Actually cyclists are still sliding down the embankment to acces Sandwich St. Who is now liable if a cyclist is hurt using this area? Will more fences go up to try and stop them.

Nearly into the twelth year, 245 reports supported by 31 Residents Responses have now been recorded, inspected and forwarded to transport providers and politicians. The improvements that have been made by Main Roads and the Cairns City Council for cyclists, will also benefit people with disabilities who ride tricycles and wheelchairs, people pushing prams and walking the dog, pedestrians etc. Even motorists benefit from road improvements such as wide road shoulders.

The Bikeability Toolkit - Bikeability Web Site
The bikeability Toolkit is a resource researched by the Bicycle Federation of Australia, that every one can use, engineers, planners, advocacy groups and cyclists in our communities. We would like to suggest that our cyclists have a go at using this tool to enhance their reports. Here are a few simple steps:-
1. Go to the bikeability web site.
2. Click on Route Based Checklist.
3. Save to your computer.
4. Print 2 copies and study the questions.
5. Select a bike route from home to your most travelled destination.
6. Ride the bike route and make notes and take photos as you go.
7. Then fill in the questions on the checklist.
8. Send to CBUG and keep the second copy for reference.
