CBUG BIKEABILITY CAMPAIGN

SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT - BIKEABILITY TOOL KIT

Dear People,

Join the CBUG Bikeability Campaign.

The Bicycle Federation of Australia has researched a project funded by the Australian Greenhouse Office and the Cycling Promotion Fund, whereby engineers, planners, elected representatives, advocacy groups and cyclists can be more effective. The bikeability toolkit is a resource that can be used for many reasons but most importantly, raising the quality of our cycling routes. As you all know Cairns has always been a cycling city, but the challenges of population growth, traffic increase and additional costs, require that we take a fresh look at the kind of vision we want for Cairns.

To become familiar with how the bikeability toolkit works, I suggest that you try it out:-

We would like to encourage everyone to have a go at using this toolkit to enhance their understanding of cycling issues and to help CBUG represent the cyclists of Cairns more effectively. Here are a few simple steps:-

1. Go to the bikeability web site Bikeability Web Site
2. Click on Route Based Checklist.
3. Print or Save to your computer.
4. Print and study the questions.
5. Select a bike route from home to your most travelled destination, even if it is just to the corner store or for a longer trip to work, recreation or cycle training.
6. Ride the bike route and make notes and take photos as you go.
7. Then fill in the questions on the checklist.
8. Send copies to CBUG, the Council, Main Roads, your elected representative etc, and keep a copy for reference.

Even if you think this is too difficult, have a go just the same. You may be surprised that it's not as hard as you think. We have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

All bikeability checklists that we receive, will be presented to the Cairns Pedestrian and Cycle Strategy FOCUS GROUP next February 2007.

CYCLONES - LARRY AND MONICA

Bicycles for people who have lost their homes and posessions:

Cyclone Larry arrived in North Queensland on Monday the 20th of March 2006. To rub salt into the wound, a month later, Cyclone Monica brought so much rain that roads were cut, people evacuated, rescues by helicopter and the good news is that the dams are now full. There have been record rain falls changing the record books but will there now be another period of time when the rain fall will drop and there are water shortages again.

The courage and resilience of people is wonderful and everyone is cleaning up, rebuilding and looking to the future again. This disaster and now the rising cost of motor fuel will make many people"s lives a challenge. So what can we do to help? Generally, the best way is cash donations to the relief effort but CBUG came up with the idea that many people and children have probably lost their transport, cars and bikes. We sent a message to three email lists asking for donations of second hand bicycles, money and labour. To our surprise, The Variety Club (a children's charity) in North Queensland has donated a large quantity of children bicycles. CBUG has assembled some bicycles for Babinda with the help of the local people and already there are some very happy children. But what about the adults?

To expand this project to other towns, we need more help please:-

1. CASH - for spare parts and tools.
2. VOLUNTEERS - to assemble new bicycles (VARIETY CLUB) and repair second hand bicycles.
3. DONATED BICYCLES - preferably in good condition or with minimal repair required.
