PRESS RELEASE - CAIRNS BIKE WEEK 2005

Cairns cyclists again have shown their support for cycling as an important and growing part of Cairn's transport system by participating in the many events during this years Cairns Bike Week between August 9 and 13.

From hair-care tips for female cyclists to warm up exercises and bicycle maintenance, Cairns Bike Week had it all. Many secondary schools took part in Ride to School Day and the cash prizes will very soon be awarded to the schools with most participating students. The Ride to Work Day free breakfast, again hosted by the City of Cairns with the Navy supplying the cooking skills, sent more than 60 commuting cyclists on to work happy and well-fed. Cairns Cycling Club’s open night at their Koch Street velodrome gave any interested cyclists a BBQ dinner and a chance to experience the unique sport of track racing. The grand finale of the week was the Family Fun Ride jointly organised by Cairns Bicycle User Group and CAFNEC. This ride, which started and finished at CAFNEC’s Envirofiesta on August 13th, allowed over 50 cyclists to explore 17 kilometres of off-road and on-road bicycle paths, quiet back streets and linear parks through Edge Hill, Whitfield, Kanimbla, Mooroobool, Earlville, Westcourt, Parramatta Park and Manunda. Riders from the Cairns Blind and Vision Impaired Group participated as a relay team of “stokers” on the back of a tandem and greatly enjoyed the event.

Councillor Fran Lindsay, chair of the Bike Week organising committee said “ The success of this years Bike Week was only possible due to the efforts of all the individuals and groups that organised events, the financial support of the City of Cairns and Queensland Transport Bicycle Week grants and, most importantly, the participation of Cairns’ cyclists.

Bike Week 2006 will be from the 13th to the 20th of August and we look forward to it being bigger and better than Bike Week 2005 as the desire for fitness and rising fuel prices encourage even more people to get out and about on bicycles.”

So now it's all systems go by those who have been in CBUG since it started 10 years ago, working together with new members. This is great news.

CBUG MEETING

INVITATION:

Come along to our first meeting for 2005/2006 on Thursday 16 June 2005 at 5.30 pm at 17 Gordon St, Earlville, Cairns

CBUG is alive and well. We have a very enthusiastic new committee with varying skills and bicycle interests. We look forward to a very productive year.

We were impressed with the presentation given to us by Helius Visser, Engineer, Cairns City Council and the attendance of our Deputy Mayor, Cr Margaret Gill and our active bicycle Councillor, Cr Fran Lindsay who told us about the programme for Bike Week in August.

Not only do we have a great committee, but we have a partnership with CAFNEC, Cairns own environmental community organisation, to organise a bike ride in Bike Week.

So now it's all systems go by those who have been in CBUG since it started 10 years ago, working together with new members. This is great news.

AGM and 10th Anniversary

INVITATION:

Wednesday 25th May 2005:

To be held at the Edge Bowls Club, Woodward St, Cairns.

6pm - Dinner (pay your own)

7pm - Meeting

Guest Speaker - Helius Visser, Engineer, Cairns City Council.

Come along and celebrate 10 years of voluntary community service by cyclists within the Cairns area. We have a proud tradition of advocacy for the improvement of facilities for cyclists, pedestrians and people with disabilities.

This web site is one of the tools that we use to further our aims of influencing our politicians and transport providers to construct Australian Standard bicycle facilities. Motor traffic is getting out of hand. We must have alternate forms of transport and cycling not only provides freedom of movement but enhances our health, lifestyle, sporting activities, tourism, economy and general well being. If there is so much going for cycling then why isn't there much more attention and funding being paid to this so simple solution to our modern day ills.

We hope to see a great roll up of people from all walks of life, all ages and ability. Let's keep the wheels turning in more ways than one.
