CBUG

27th January 2004

The Chief Executive Officer Attention: Debbie Wellington.
Cairns City Council
Spence St
Cairns 4870

Dear Debbie,

CAIRNS PLAN - Bikeway Maps

We wish to make the following comments on the bikeway maps for bicycle transport contained in the draft Cairns Plan.

In January 2001, CBUG inspected one of the 37 A3 maps of the local authority of Cairns and marked the map of the Earlville area to show bike lanes and car parking lanes. Hopefully the consultants when recording bicycle assets in the first stage of the new cycle and pedestrian strategy will show which roads have bicycle lanes and which roads have car parking lanes. Even though car parking lanes are not a bicycle facility, they do provide sealed road space suitable for riding bicycles where there are no cars parked on the road.

1. Bike Lanes:

All the on-road bicycle routes are marked as "bicycle lanes". This is incorrect because not all of these roads have bicycle lanes. People looking at these maps will be incorrectly informed. Therefore people will not be able to make a correct assessment and be able to comment on the bikeway maps in the Cairns Plan.

2. Missing Maps:

The Earlville Library and the City Library copies of the Cairns Plan do not contain a bikeway map nor a road hierarchy map for the district "rural roads".

Cairns City Council customer service copy of the Cairns Plan does not contain a bikeway map nor a road hierarchy map for the district "rural roads".

3. Request:

We request that the bikeway maps for all "districts" are corrected to state "bicycle routes" and remove "bicycle lanes" from the legend until such time that correct information is processed onto the maps. Insert the corrected bikeways maps into all the "districts" of all copies of the draft Cairns Plan.

Signed:- Lenore Evans, Secretary, Cairns Bicycle User Group.
