CAIRNS BIKE WEEK 2004
Bike Week will be held this year during the week before the local elections on 27th March. Hopefully bicycle transport will be an election issue to be considered seriously by all candidates.Bike Week is conducted through out the state and is sponsored primarily by Queensland Transport with assistance from local councils and bicycle user groups.
The focus is to increase bicycles as a form of transport and the "Ride to Work Day" is the primary event. In conjunction with this event a survey will be the form for the draw of prizes. CBUG will do an assessment of the survey which will help the council to deliver bicycle infrastructure and information about where and how often people ride to work.
In Cairns, our cycling clubs will hold "Come and Try" in conjunction with their club activities. Last year these events were very successful.
Also for the first time, Cairns will have a "Women on Wheels" information evening to encourage more women to ride bicycles.
The bike shops will again this year contribute to prizes for the ride to work day and the women on wheels evening. Queensland Transport is the source of funding for the major prize of $250 at the ride to work day.
