- Advocating bicycle transport is more ECONOMICAL, SAFER and HEALTHIER for human beings.
- Bicycle Transport will:-
- Reduce the cost of roads and their maintenance.
- Reduce accidents and human trauma.
- Reduce air polution.
- Increase health and fitness.
- Reduce noise.
- Provide sport and recreation opportunities.
- Provide tourism opportunities.
- Reduce transport cost to individuals.
- Reduce traffic congestion.
TRAFFIC REDUCTION DEPARTMENTS are the strategy of the future.
We all know the 4 E's, ENCOURAGEMENT, EDUCATION, ENFORCEMENT, ENGINEERING.
How about these:- EQUIPMENT, ECONOMY, ENVIRONMENT, ENTERTAINMENT, ECOLOGY, ENDEAVOUR, EFFICIENCY, EMBRACING, EFFECTUAL.
Perhaps this is what we say when a semi passes us EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
Bicycle Facilities on Highways and Local Arterial Roads:
1. Travelled Way:
A. Road shoulders and bicycle lanes are measured according to the speed limit of the adjacent traffic lane.
B. One discrepancy that occurs and is not always apparant just by looking at plans, is the measurement of the gutter which is usually included in the bike lane. Gutters are not always flush with the bitumen and not of a level surface. Where this occurs, measurements are made from the edge of the gutter, not the kerb face.
C. Bike lanes and road shoulders should continue the same widths around corners so as not to squeese cyclists for space and this will send a message to motorists that cyclists may be travelling ahead.2. Signalised Intersections:
A. Space for cyclists to ride through intersections on the carriageway enables continuity of travel. It can be seen at old intersections such as Anderson Rd, Woree, that cyclists are at risk where they are squeesed for space at intersections with a 80 kmh speed limit. This is not to be confused with expecting cyclists to cross at pedestrian crossings. Competent cyclists riding on the road should not be expected to use pedestrian facilities. They should be provided the space to ride on the road, responsibly as the driver of a vehicle.
B. Cyclists should be able to activate signals from minor roads where the major road has a permantent demand. A push button with a bicycle logo should be within reach of the cyclist located on a pole or a hand rail. Cyclists will then position themselves in the holding area according to the direction they wish to take. Detection under the road surface is also an option where design features allow such as corner islands.
C. Approach bicycle lanes are very important in that they provide the legal space for cyclists to travel straight ahead. They also ensure that space will follow on within the intersection also.3. Intersections:
T intersections also require approach bicycle lanes in conjunction with continuity lines to provide legal travel for cyclists riding straight ahead adjacent to the traffic lane.
4. Bus Stops:
Similar to intersections, bicycle lanes need to be marked in conjuction with continuity lines adjacent to the traffic lane.
