GIS MAPS:

It was verbally requested by council officers and recorded in the minutes of the Cairns Bikeway Strategy Working Group Meeting 7th September 2000, that "CBUG is to review and update Council's current bikeway maps to enable Council to prepare new ones. Copies of the current maps were provided to CBUG to enable this to happen".

The aim of this project is the recording of council's assets. CBUG has declined to conduct this project because it is the council's responsibility. However the first draft of the Earlville map has been printed with the corrections identified by CBUG. CBUG will review this map again with further corrections to be made. This map is an example of what council needs to inspect and record on the other 36 maps.

FUNDING THE BIKEWAY STRATEGY:

CBUG has helped to attract over $1,000,000 for road shoulders, foot bridges and paths from Federal Black Spot Funding, State Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme and the Cairns City Council. This amount is for works yet to be done. The value of works such as road shoulders, intersection design and bike lanes, underpasses, foot bridges and shared paths, completed over the past 4 years would have to be at least another $1,000,000 and possibly a lot more. Many people behind the scenes have contributed to the progress of bicycle transport in Cairns. They know who they are and we thank you very much. But, we have a very serious flaw in the implementation of our bikeway strategy. We need road shoulders - bike lanes on our local arterial roads. We need our council to make our roads safer to ride on.

CONNECT THE NORTHERN BEACHES:

What is commuting, recreation and tourism all rolled into one. It is the northern beaches bike route from Machans Beach to Palm Cove. This visionary project documented in the Cairns Bikeway Strategy was stated as policy by the mayor, Kevin Byrne before the last local election. CBUG nominated this project to our previous major, Tom Pyne for the Federation of Australia grants. These projects involve a combination of new roads and bridges, new foot bridges and paths, bike lanes, a ford, boardwalks to create a bike route from Cairns to Palm Cove for locals and visitors.
