SYDNEY OLYMPICS, YEAR 2000:
Road conditions for cycle training in Cairns are:-
Route 1: From Wrights Creek south of Edmonton to Cairns, Bruce Hwy, continue along Mulgraqve Rd, turn left at Mc Coombe St, continue to Greenslopes St, turn right, continue and turn left on to Sheridan St and the Capt Cook Hwy, then all the way north to Kewarra Beach turnoff.
Route 2: Same as route 1 until McCoombe St, turn left at Reservoir Rd, continue along new highway, Redlynch By-pass to connect to the Capt Cook Hwy at Smithfield, continue north to Kewarra Beach.
These routes have road shoulders and bike lanes suitable for long distance training of approximately 40 kms (24 miles). North and south of this route the highway has no shoulders.
Its not just Sydney that is gearing up for the Olympics, Cairns is being looked at as a training venue for overseas teams. Cycling athletes from many sports will be training on our roads. The Cairns Bikeway Strategy identifies road works that will improve cyclists safety. Main Roads includes wide shoulders on the new road works at Edmonton, Brindsmead/Kamerunga Rd and Redlynch By-pass. It would be good if the Cairns City Council could complete the paths and foot bridges to link the northern beaches for recreational riders both local and tourists. Road shoulders need to be constructed on existing Main Roads and Local Roads for cyclists' safety. Our existing bike path network needs regular maintenance. All this is achievable over the next year to put Cairns on the olympic and tourist maps for cycling activities.
