CYCLE COMPATABILITY INDEX
James Cook University: We are undertaking student's research projects on bicycle comfort index at intersections and roundabouts.
AIM: Traffic operations and geometric conditions at an intersection influence the cyclist's perception of riding comfort and safety and consequently their decision to cycle. This effect is modelled as the Bicycle Comfort Index at Intersections (BCII). This index is purpoted to be a manifestation of the comfort and safety level of the cyclists at an intersection.
INQUIRY INTO REDUCING THE ROAD TOLL FOR YOUNG QUEENSLANDERS
Serious accidents involving young drivers in Queensland will be examined by a parliamentary committee in an effort to reduce the number of youths dying on the state's roads. Queensland Transport figures show 604 probationary drivers and motorbike riders aged 17-19 were involved in serious crashes in 2001 where someone was either killed or hospitalised - over 5 years 1996 to 2001 the average was 528 - The Parliamentary Travelsafe Committee will examine the involvement of novice drivers in crashes, what measures should be taken to reduce such crashes and what additional training should be provided - this includes driving at night, on weekends and with a full load of passengers and these issues will be explored in a separate inquiry. BULL BARS:
Are they really necessary? Not only are cyclists and pedestrians at risk in a collision with a bull bar but people in cars are also vulnerable. Another two vehicle accident in Queensland 22 October 2002 where the parents and a child were killed in a sedan and the driver of the vehicle with a bull bar received a few scratches - TV news. Why aren't bull bars regulated so that a very good reason has to be produced to warrant their use?
