CAIRNS CITY COUNCIL
The Cairns Bicycle User Group is a non-political organisation and does not align with any party or team. However we do wish to encourage all our politicians to take cycling issues seriously, to place bicycle transport in their policies and to inform the public of their intentions to do so, prior to the elections in 2004.

ELECTION 25 MARCH 2000:
CCC ELECTION RESULTS:
Congratulations to all our new councillors. Thankyou to the six winning councillors who have responded to our questionnaire, Kevin Byrne Mayor, Paul Gregory Div 1, Fran Lindsay Div 2, Jason O'Brien Div 5, Margaret Gill Div 6, Sno Bonneau Div 11.
We now have two CBUG members on our council, Fran Lindsay Div 2 and Jason O'Brien Div 5.
CBUG QUESTIONNAIRE:
We have had 32 responses from the candidates in the coming election. THANKYOU - ONE AND ALL. A questionnaire has been sent to all candidates with a request for their permission to enter their answers on this web site.
Issues such as the Cairns Bikeway Strategy and DisABILITY Access will feature strongly in the council election and we already have 7 candidates who are members of CBUG.
The VISION for Cairns will be dramatically enhanced by the implementation of the Cairns Bikeway Strategy. Locals, vistiors, tourists and associated businesses will all benefit from improvements to our bicycle and pedestrian facilities. For example:-
1. A wide path along the Esplanade would be well patronised. Just look at the 3.5 metre cement path for 2 kms along The Strand, Townsville and see the activity, walkers, people in wheel chairs, joggers, cyclists, roller bladers, dogs, kids in prams etc.
2. Just imagine a bikeway from Machans Beach to Palm Cove, along the coast without having to go anywhere near the main highway. A road bridge over Richters Creek and four foot bridges are needed to connect this bikeway.
3. Foot bridges are needed in Gordonvale, Edmonton, Patience St to open up the bikeway network throughout Cairns, which is a combination of paths and roads for commuter and recreation purposes.
4. How about improving the Captain Cook Highway from Cairns to Ellis Beach and even on to Mossman and Port Douglas; and the Bruce Highway from Cairns to Miriwinni, with road shoulders. Apart from saving lives lost in motor vehicle accidents, reducing road maintenance and producing road longevity, road shoulders would make it possible for use by racing cyclists, triathlons, touring cyclists, commuter and recreational cyclists.
5. Buildings and roads and footpaths need to be accessible for people with disABILITIES. Smooth crossing of gutters and flat crossing of intersections as well as being able to get into buildings and especially toilets. For example there is no ramp at the front entrance to the Cairns Civic Theatre.
THE VISIONS ARE ENDLESS!
