Critical MASS: Last Friday in the month.

NOTICE: All bicycle riders:- Again this Friday, 28th November 1997, 5 pm, Fogarty Fountain Park, Cairns. We had 25 riders in August and 12 in September and some in October, so keep coming along and bring a picnic tea.

BICYCLE THEFT PREVENTION:

A letter from the Cairns Police has requested CBUG to register member's bicyles and serial numbers. We have compiled a form to help cyclists itentify not only bicycle frames and serial numbers, but parts also. CBUG will pass this detailed information to the Police so that bicycles AND parts are recoverable. For more information please contact the CBUG Secretary.

Senior Constable M.J.Carige says:- "Since the commencement of this Operation to reduce the number of bicycle thefts in the Cairns area our major hindrance has been the failure of people to take basic precautions in securing their bicyles. We are encourageing people through lectures at school, TV advertisements and newspaper articles, to take the time to write down the serial number of their bicycle and to secure their bicycles adquately when out or at home. Further to this we are endeavouring to have every person inform the police of the theft of their bicycle when it is stolen."

CBUG encourages all members to register their bike. A form is available from the Secretary. Eventually a form will be available on this web site for all cyclists.

    BICYCLE ACCIDENTS:

Have you ever had an accident, near miss, harrasment, bad experience, etc? Please let us know. Complete an on-line Accident Email Form or print an "Accident Report Form", fill it in and post to us.

DON'T FORGET TO REPORT YOUR ACCIDENT TO:-

  • Police.
  • Main Roads and your State Member of Parliament.
  • Cairns City Council and your Divisional Councillor.
  • Anyone else you can think of.
  • And don't forget CBUG.
  • Tell the whole world.

We are documenting our own statistics about accidents that may not get filtered to official records. This information is helpful with our submissions.

    QUEENSLAND PARLIAMENTARY TRAVELSAFE COMMITTEE:
    Top of Page

CBUG made a submission to the Travelsafe Forum on Dual Use Paths for cyclists and pedestrians. Again our Cyclists' Road/Path Reports were helpful in providing acurate information to this forum. However we conclude that "at the end of the day", FUNDING BY ALL LEVELS OF GOVERNMENT is required to implement the findings and recommendations of activities such as this forum.

    FEDERAL BLACKSPOT FUNDING:

The Cairns Bicycle User Group has submitted three nominations for Federal Black Spot Funding.

  • March 97, Shoulder Sealing, Sheridan St, adjacent to Foxwood.

  • June 97, Bicycle detector loop and longer signal phasing, intersection Capt Cook Hwy/General Aviation.

  • June 97, Shoulder Sealing, Capt Cook Hwy, Aeroglen Dr turnoff - Johnston St.

We have had no official reply to our first nomination. According to the Australian CYCLIST, letter to the Editor, bicycle related blackspots so far have received no funding for Queensland. Also was stated that bicycle casualty and accident statistics may not be complete.

Therefore it would seem, when black spots are nominated, the relevant statistics that are referred to, may be shortlisted. In our nominations, we quoted Cyclists' Road Reports and Newspaper Articles, as relevant information.

    RALLY UPDATE:
    Top of Page

One hundred and thirty one (131) cyclists rode in the GRAND BICYCLE RALLY. Riders included children as young as 2 yrs on child seats to the elderly, one lady of 69yrs. A tricyclist managed to keep up with the crowd and sporting clubs were well represented and looked spectacular in their lycra gear. What was very evident was the attendance of commuter cyclists, many of whom ride to work.

CBUG would very much like to thank all those cyclists and supporters, (you know who you are), who worked to make this rally such a huge success.

The Mayor of Cairns, Cr Tom Pyne, addressed the crowd at the finish and assured the community of the Council's commitment to the strategy. Funding has been promised and cyclists are hopeful that works will now begin.

    2nd April 1997

Cyclists are requested to wear a helmet and bring water to drink.

The 9km ride will travel from Brinsmead Shopping Plaza, on Pease St, Alfred St, McCoombe St, Mulgrave Rd, Florence St, and on to The Esplanade, travelling north along the bike path and finishing opposite McKenzie St.

Dignitaries will includeThe Mayor Tom Pyne, Cr Fran Lindsay, Cr Deirdre Ford, Verda Clayton (CCC "bike officer"), Natarsha Williams (World BMX champion), Glen Prior (Triaathlon Club), Richie Bates (Cycling Club), Glen Jacobs (Mountain Bike Club) and Henry Carrick (Sporting Wheelies).

The aim of the rally is to draw attention to governments at all levels to provide for non-motorised transport.

Motorists are called upon to be more safety conscious when interacting with cyclists on the road.

Cyclists are called upon to obey road rules, wear a helmet and have lights on their bike at night.
