Friends of the Irwin Track:
Friends of the Irwin Track are working to get the closed Irwin Road (the old railway line) opened to the public for walking and cycling. Irwin Rd runs from Millaa Millaa to the Falls, between Free Hold land and Recreational land. This road has been leased and closed to the public. Walkers may take a challenging route through the bush. A man will go to court on Thursday for walking on the Irwin Rd, charged with trespassing. It is a shame that this "rails to trails" may be lost because public space has been leased (section of Irwin Rd ) preventing short access to the Falls for walking, cycling, horse riding, wheelchairs, prams etc, compared with twice the distance by road.
Tourist buses bring people to the Falls every day. The only access is the Millaa Falls Rd which travels through free hold private property. The Irwin Rd (old railway line) has been closed to the public. What does this say for the future of tourism and recreation for visitors and locals.
Millaa Millaa Falls is an icon of Far North Queensland. Buses and cars are not the only mode of transport. It is good to encourage people to walk and cycle especially in pleasant surroundings. There are policies that declare that pollution and health, our fauna and flora, tourism and recreation, are real social and economic issues worthy of being integrated with other local economic activities.
The Cairns Bikeway Strategy documents the planning of foot bridges and paths to create short cuts through our suburbs and to connect the beaches. So too the same issue applies to locations in country towns for visitors and the locals.

CAIRNS BICYCLE USER GROUP for their CBUG ROAD, PATH & ACCIDENT REPORTS
The CBUG reports are a web-based compilation of reports which detail bicycle accidents (including causal factors if known and outcomes) and the status of road and path developments in the Cairns locality. Once recorded a report may be perused multiple times and pursued no matter how long it takes. The "subject list" shows how many reports relate to a particular issue or location.
The aims of the online resource are:
1. To provide an efficient and safe environment for the promotion of bicycle riding.
2. Encourage all levels of government to take seriously the funding, construction and maintenance of standard bicycle facilities.
3. Encourage people to think about how they can be part of the solution. The resource and the dedication of the Cairns Bicycle User Group has achieved significant results to improve road safety for cyclists in Cairns.
I would like to call on Lenore Evans of the Cairns Bicycle User Group to accept this award.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CBUG would like to thank all the people who have reported to us their information and concerns and those people who have helped in any way at all. Special recognition must go to Clemens Vermeulen, our service provider who has been so patient and helpful with the progress of our web site. Of course our efforts would be fruitless without Queensland Transport, Main Roads and the Cairns City Council having a vision for the people of Cairns and our visitors.
Already we have CBUG members who are committed to helping the advancement of travel options, sport, fitness and recreation for cyclists, pedestrians and people with disabilities. We will do our best to achieve your desires but we also need your help. Please contact me with offers of further information and assistance.
Thankyou one and all.
Lenore Evans, Secretary and Reports Officer, Cairns Bicycle User Group
Bicycle Push Buttons:
The first of a series of bicycle push buttons at signalised intersections in Cairns has been provided by Queensland Main Roads at Sheridan St and Upward St. This will benefit all cyclists especially students at the adjacent high school. Also people using motorised wheel chairs will be able activate the signals especially at locations where it is difficult to access the foot path and pedestrian crossings. The function of a bicycle push button at an intersection next to the bike lane, positioned at the stop line, is to give cyclists the ability to change the signals from red to green when a motor vehicle is not there to activate the green signal. The buttons are provided on the minor roads only because the lights on the major roads automatically revert to the green light. There are times during the day, at night, public holidays and week ends, when motor vehicles are not there to activate the green lights from a minor road. This may happen at every signalised intersection in Cairns and there are 73 of them. Main Roads has made a start and we hope that the Cairns City Council will follow this example.
CBUG has promoted this facility ever since our reports officer saw one in Brisbane and took a photograph. Ever since we have been pushing for the bicycle push buttons and one day this year we received a phone call from Main Roads saying that they would like to start installing the buttons for cyclists. We thank the Main Roads for this initiative and hope that many more locations will receive the "green light".
2002 Queensland Road Safety Awards:
The Queensland Road Safety Awards Scheme is a joint initiative of RACQ and the Centre for Accident Research & Road Safety - Queensland (CARRS-Q).The scheme was introduced in 2000 in a bid to increase community involvement in the battle against road deaths and injuries.
The awards recognise and honour the outstanding efforts of individuals and groups who have undertaken initiatives to improve safety on Queensland roads. To enter, please complete and forward the QRSA Nomination Form to CARRS-Q by 31 May 2002. Nomination forms are available on the CAARS-Q website at www.carrsq.qut.edu.au or by telephoning 07 3864 4568 or emailing carrsq@qut.edu.au
NOTE:- CBUG has nominated for this award submitting information about our web site and reports project. We have been invited to attend the presentation at Parliament House, Brisbane on Tuesday 30th July 2002. Winners of 5 categories will be announced at the ceremony conducted by Steve Bredhauer, Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads and Member for Cook, Far North Queensland.
Australian Statistics:
Senator Ron Boswell, parliamentary secretary reports that fatal statistics has increased for cyclists and motor cyclists.
Cairns Bikeway Strategy:
At the meeting of the Cairns City Council Works Committee on 20th February 2002, it was adopted that approval be sought from the Department of Main Roads for T.I.D.S.funding 2002/2003:-1. Patience St foot bridge and path be deferred for one year, because permits and land planning require more attention. A revision of this project will be undertaken by the council.
2. So as not to hold up the strategy progress, the following works are a possible alternative:-
(i) Path - Poolwood Rd, both sides, Whale Cl to Ibis Cl.
(ii) Road shoulder - McGregor St, southern side, Capt Cook Hwy to Cheviot St.
(iii) Road shoulder - Upward St, northern side, Sheridan St to Water St.
(iv) Road shoulder - Ishmael Rd, western side, between both intersections with Cavallaro Ave.UPDATE 13 April 2002:
Changes will be:-
(iv) Ishmael Rd - Road shoulders will be constructed on both sides of the road.
(i) Poolwood Rd - Path will not be constructed at this time. Funds will be diverted to other projects.CBUG has submitted that shoulder sealing of roads required on one side of the road only be constructed to complete the facilities to safe and legal requirements.
"I wish to draw your attention to the roads that require a bicycle lane on one side of the road. A bicycle lane already exists on the other side of the road. They are:-
1. Riverstone Rd, south side, from the Bruce Hwy to Cannon St.
2. Bicentennial Rd, west side, south from Robert Rd.
3. Metrez St, west side, corner of Yarrum St.
4. Machans Beach Access Rd, north side, No 90 to roundabout at Prior St.
Note:- Bicycle lanes on one side of the road encourage wrong way riding by children."
