Comment:- Believe it or not - if you are cycling or walking alone, you are probably safer travelling on the road. These criminals work in numbers and attack people who are travelling alone, day or night, in more secluded places such as the foot path. Open spaces are safer and this is why road shoulders and bike lanes provide safe facilities for cyclists and pedestrians. For safety to be effective, bike lanes need to be constructed at the standard width, ie 1.5 m at 60 kmh, according to AUSTROADS Guide to Traffic Engineering Practices Part 14 Bicycles 1999.

20/5/2002 - Cyclist Brinsmead-Kamerunga Rd, near Freshwater Ck Cairns Sun 22/5/2002 About 4 pm, 12 yr old boy, approached by a male about 30 yrs old on an old white mountain bike and asked to do certain things, boy fled Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000
24/2/2002 - Cyclist Upward St Cairns Post 26/2/2002 Approached from behind and pushed off his bike on the foot path at 2.30 am, punched and credit card stolen Did not get a clear look at the attackers
22/2/2002 - Pedestrian Grafton St Cairns Post 26/2/2002 A 26 yr old man was confronted by three men, one weilding a knife at 1.45 am. They held it close to his chest and he gave them his wallet, mobile phone and they ran away One man was caucasian, 25 yrs old, 172 cm, fair complexion, wearing red T shirt with Carlsberg on it in white - other two were causcasian, about 20 yrs and 25 yrs
22/2/2002 - Pedestrian McCoombe St Cairns Post 26/2/2002 Woman attacked in broad daylight - Thieves attempted to steal her handbag after pushing her over - she fought them off and they ran off Aboriginal or Torres Straight Islander appearance
