CYCLING STRATEGIES: Update 26 May 2005

DISABILITY ADCOCACY: Update 24 May 2005

Robert Pyne is the "Regional Disability Liaison Officer for Far North Queensland". Go to:- RDLO

CBUG COMMENT: Bicycle facilities such as bike lanes, bike paths, foot bridges, road crossings, bridges etc are used by people with disabilities who ride tricycles, electric scooters and wheel chairs. Therefore it is important that these people are taken into account when designing bicycle facilities. Bike lanes need to be at least the "desirable" standard width for the safe passage of a tricycle. Bike paths need to be wide enough to cater for the safe movement of wheeled transport and pedestrians. In Queensland it is legal to ride on a foot path unless a sign says not to. Therefore the standard for foot paths is now of a wider width in Cairns. Robert Pyne is an honorary member of the Cairns Bicycle User Group whose assistance and advice is appreciated.
