Cycle rides around Cairns, suitable for fitness, training, recreation or tourist purposes.

You will need a road map of Cairns - The Cairns Hema street map has the bike paths marked in red dots and walking tracks in green dots - available from newsagents and map shops.


ONE DAY RIDES

Basic Circle - Cairns to Smithfield
Route 1 - City to the Botanical Gardens, Whitfield arrow walks, Mangrove board walks
Route 2 - Copperlode Dam, Lake Morris
Route 3 - Crystal Cascades
Route 4 - Barron Gorge and Lake Placid
Route 5 - Northern Beaches

TWO (OR MORE) DAYS RIDES

Route 6 - Mossman and Port Douglas
Route 7 - Cairns to Atherton Tablelands from the north
Route 8 - Cairns to Atherton Tablelands from the south
Route 9 - Cairns to Innisfail


Basic Circle: City to Caravonica and Smithfield

Approximately 26 km from Whitfield - and will vary from actual starting point.

Start:
From anywhere in Cairns and proceed to Reservoir Rd.
continue past Whitfield turn-off (McManus St) -
and continue through the Brinsmead gap -
travelling north over the Redlynch overpass -
across the Barron River -
through Caravonica to the roundabout, Capt Cook Hwy -
(activity) Skyrail and Jabakai entertainment centre -
turn right at the Capt Cook Highway by using the underpass just north of the roundabout,then travel south on the Captain Cook Highway, over the Barron River, past the airport to Cairns North -
from this point travel back to where you started.
(additional) Turn left at Caravonica roundabout, Capt Cook Hwy, towards Smithfield and the northern beaches and return
and continue back to Cairns via the Capt Cook Highway or via the way you came through Redlynch.


Route 1: City to the Botanical Gardens - Smithfield Range arrow walks - Mangrove boardwalks.

Start:
At the Information Booth, The Esplanade near Fogarty Fountain Park, opposite Spence St.
Go towards the Pier down the path. Stay on the water front.
Travel south along the water front to the Hilton.
Continue in front of wharves and the beach at the Yaught Club, through to Trinity Wharf.
Trinity Wharf - See Trinity Inlet and water activities - Have a drink and some food.
Continue along the wharf as far as you can go - See all the ships.
Enter Wharf St.
Continue Kenny St.
Turn right Bunda St - Cairns Central Shopping Center.
Continue to right turn at Martyn St.
Continue to roundabout at Upward St, right turn.
Turn left at Dunn St just before the railway line.
Cross Grove St and travel along the bike path.
Cross James St and travel along the bike path.
Cross Greenslopes St and enter bike path through the Centenary Lakes - Have a rest in the shade.
Cross Collins Ave to Botanical Gardens - Have a wander, meal, drink.
(extra activity) Take an arrow walk up Whitfield Range, short climb to lookout or climb and long walk.
Travel east to highway and cross at pedestrian crossing.
(extra activity) To go to mangrove board walk, travel east towards airport.
Travel east O'Keefe St to Lake St.
Travel south to Lily St, turn left.
Travel east to Abbott St, turn right.
Travel south to Mc Kenzie St.
Travel south along the Esplanade bike path (bird watching), all the way back to START at Spence St.
Have a rest, more food and drinks, go shopping, see a movie, go to a night club.


Route 2: Copperlode Dam, Lake Morris.

Approximately 36 km.

Start:
From the basic circle at Reservoir Rd and turn left just past the Brinsmead gap, signed Lake Morris Road.
Be prepared for a stiff climb over 16 km. There is a kiosk at Lake Morris for refreshments.


Route 3: Crystal Cascades.

Approximately 45 km.

Start:
From the basic circle at Reservoir Rd, travel past the Freshwater turnoff -
and turn left at the Crystal Cascades (Redlynch) sign just before the overpass -
travel along Deviation Rd to roundabout -
turn left into Redlynch-Intake Rd and continue to Crystal Cascades.

When returning, ride straight on at the roundabout, through Redlynch and complete the circle. For a shorter ride, turn right at Redlynch, ride under the Redlynch overpass to Freshwater, Stratford, Aeroglen Dr back to Cairns North.


Route 4: Barron Gorge and Lake Placid.

Approximately 37 km.

Start:
From the basic circle at Reservoir Rd, over the Redlynch overpass, over the Barron River and immediately turn left at the Lake Placid sign. On return, turn left and complete the circle.

Alternate ride -
Start from Cairns North
ride north over Saltwater Ck and turn left at Aeroglen Dr and continue north
ride west through Stratford
turn right at Freshwater Connection (railway station)
ride north along Lower Freshwater Rd
turn left at Harley St
turn right at the highway (Brinsmead-Kamerunga Rd)
ride over the Barron River and turn left to Lake Placid.


Route 5: Northern Beaches.

Start:
For shorter beach visits ride from Cairns North via the Capt Cook Hwy to Machans Beach, Holloways Beach and Yorkeys Knob.(all south of Smithfield)

For longer rides, Trinity Beach - 45 km return, and more to Kewarra Beach, Clifton Beach and Palm Cove. 60 km return to Ellis Beach. (please note that there are no road shoulders or bike paths north of Palm Cove)


Route 6: Mossman and Port Douglas.

Approximately 160 - 190 km.

Start:
From Cairns North and travel north along the Capt Cook Hwy to Port Douglas turn-off. (80km)
Mossman is 15km north of the Port Douglas turn-off. (please note there are limited road shoulders north of Palm Cove, tight corners and lots of traffic)


Route 7: Cairns to Atherton Tableland - from the north.

Approximately 208 km.

Start:
From Cairns North and ride north on the Capt Cook Hwy, (please note there are limited road shoulders north of Palm Cove, tight corners and lots of traffic), turn left up the Rex Range, south of the Port Douglas turn-off -
up the hill to Mt Molloy, south to Mareeba, east to Kuranda and Cairns. (note that the Kuranda Range road is narrow, steep, with limited shoulders and tight corners - you might like to put your bike on the Kuranda Tourist Train)


Route 8: Cairns to Atherton Tableland - from the south.

Approximately 178 km.

Start:
From Cairns and ride south on the Bruce Hwy to Gordonvale -
turn right up the Gillies Range to Atherton (steep, narrow and 90 curves) -
(extra places to visit) Lake Eacham and Lake Tinaroo -
ride north to Mareeba -
ride east to Kuranda and Cairns. (note that the Kuranda Range road is narrow, steep, with limited shoulders and tight corners - you might like to put your bike on the Kuranda Tourist Train)


Route 9: Cairns to Innisfail.

Approximately 180 km.

Start:
From Cairns and ride south on the Bruce Hwy. (please note that the highway has limited shoulders south of Edmonton)
For shorter rides - Fishery Falls - Deeral Landing - The boulders at Babinda -
Cairns to Gordonvale return 50 km.
